Katherine George is a social media expert, entrepreneur, Facebook Blueprint Lead Trainer, #SheMeansBusiness mentor, blogger, speaker and vlogger (to name a few things.) Obviously Katherine is passionate about social media, but she is also keen to support small businesses and entrepreneurs to help them succeed in business. Another area Katherine feels strongly about is mental health, and raising awareness of the effects of social media on our mental health to promote healthy ways to combat these.
Outside of work, Katherine can either be found on her horse exploring the Cornish countryside, or on the water on her paddle-board (the latter often straight from the office!) – Now doesn’t this make us a tad-envious!
Katherine’s businesses Oh So Social and Oh So Savvy are based right by the water in Penryn, Cornwall, which is perfect for a spot of lunchtime paddle-boarding! Katherine founded Oh So Social in 2014, a social media marketing agency that offers a range of services to businesses of all sizes, including comprehensive social media management, social media strategy, training and advertising.
Her sister company Oh So Savvy, founded in 2019, offers start-ups, entrepreneurs and small businesses the opportunity to access affordable expert social media training at a time that suits them, with training videos, webinars and online support.
With Oh So Social, Katherine opened up a new wave of marketing in Cornwall, by launching the first marketing agency to focus solely on social media. She launched Oh So Social from her kitchen table, and has developed the agency from this humble beginning offering training, advice, strategy and management to businesses from her home. Katherine says “People often enquired about one social media aspect and ended up with them all, so I began creating affordable social media packages with something to fit every business, as well as creating bespoke offerings for anyone who wanted them.”
Having worked on high-profile projects for other agencies outside of Cornwall, such as The Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Dancing on Ice and Team GB, Katherine returned to Cornwall and had a realisation. She noticed that her level of social media knowledge and experience was in short supply locally and that businesses were in need of an affordable and truly knowledgable social media agency. So, Oh So Social was born.
Following on from the success of Oh So Social, Katherine realised that there was a gap in the market for affordable expert social media training to benefit start-ups, entrepreneurs and small businesses. I created a sister company, Oh So Savvy, to fill this gap with an online training platform, resources and support.
We asked Katherine what she saw as the main challenges facing her business operations or growth. Katherine said “I have faced three challenges during my business journey.
The first is being a young woman in business. I’m sure any woman reading this will appreciate how hard it is being a woman in business and being a young woman means you need to be exceptional all of the time.
The second is my own mental health and imposter syndrome. I’ve always struggled with anxiety and depression and running a business has made managing these harder. But, refusing to stop, I’ve learnt ways to manage this and am in a much stronger position for it.
And finally, the fact that social media is still undervalued in people’s perception. Lots of people still don’t realise how valuable and how technical social media management is. We do social media right and are proud of that. We bring the social back to social media, making it a valuable resource for businesses of all shapes and sizes.”
Since Katherine launched Oh So Social in 2014, she has had so many proud moments. There’s nothing more rewarding as an expert in social media than to be recognised by the top platforms in the industry. This is why she is so proud to have been chosen as one of 24 Facebook and Instagram accredited #SheMeansBusiness mentors in the UK, and one of only eight Facebook Blueprint Lead Trainers in Europe.
Not only that, but her hard work providing advice and support to entrepreneurs and small businesses has been celebrated by Enterprise Nation, who have named Katherine as one of the Top Marketing Advisers in the UK three years running.
This year, Katherine has also been selected by Small Business Britain as one of their Small Business Champions, and she has been sharing her expertise at virtual training and Q&A events throughout the year.
When asked if she had a book or podcast she would recommend Katherine said “I absolutely love TED talks! I spend hours listening and watching anything TED, across a range of subjects. I feel it’s your duty as a business owner to learn as much as possible, not just about your subject area, so head to TED and enjoy.”
Katherine has many social media handles across different platforms so please head over and give her businesses a follow:
